New OS X software updates about to hit the mainstream

A new set of software updates will soon be available from Apple, including a “supplemental” OS X 10.8.5 release for Mountain Lion users, and new versions of iTunes, Safari, and Java.

For those of you interested in what the 10.8.5 update will bring, we’ve already discussed the release notes in a short post earlier today.

What we haven’t discussed yet are the iTunes and Safari updates, along with the planned Java 2013-005 release.

Apple reportedly plans to resolve an issue with iTunes Extras in the new iTunes 11.1.1.

According to the changelog (leaked to 9to5mac), “This update resolves an issue that may cause iTunes Extras to display incorrectly, fixes a problem with deleted podcasts, and improves stability.”

For those who haven’t yet updated to iTunes 11, the upgrade also includes iTunes Radio, Genius Shuffle, Podcast Stations, and the ability to sync with iOS 7.

As far as Safari 6.1 is concerned, the new firmware will only be released for Mac users, particularly Mountain Lion customers. It delivers everything new in Safari from OS X Mavericks, Apple’s upcoming Mac OS revision coming out later this month.

Safari 6.1 brings Shared Links, a cool new Sidebar that gives you a bird’s eye view of your most important stuff, one-click bookmarking, Safari Power Save, third-party data blocking, and built-in Yandex Search (for Russian users).

Java for OS X 2013-005 (11M4603) 1.0 will be released in tandem with these updates, delivering “improved security, reliability, and compatibility by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_65,” according to the documentation obtained by 9to5.

No release date has been provided by the source leaking these details, but we can expect all four updates to drop in a matter of days (considering that Apple has already gone to the trouble of creating documentation for each update in part).
