Reportedly, Apple posted the iPod touch 3.0 Software Update iTunes page (by mistake) as early as yesterday, according to MacRumors. The company quickly pulled the page, as it hadn’t yet published the update to its servers. The page in question now shows that Apple has reverted to advertising OS 2.2.

While the update should have been made available for both iPhone and iPod touch in the meanwhile, Apple still hasn’t published the IPSW files to its servers. Although posted as early as yesterday, iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw is the appropriate update / restore file for iPhone 3G S handsets, which, unfortunately, cannot be applied to current-generation iPhone and iPod touch models. In fact, iPhone and iPod touch owners are advised not to use the updater at all.

Apple’s Discussions forum (and countless other platforms where members of the Apple community can cry on each other’s shoulders) are now filled with complaints of Apple’s slow actions. The company promised to release iPhone OS 3.0 on June 17 and, although we’re only half way through the day, there’s no sign of the update anywhere. Generally, Apple doesn’t lag this much behind when releasing a major software update such as iPhone OS 3.0.

“When you get the new iPhone 3.0 Software Update for iPod touch, you get new features that make watching video, playing games, and listening to music even more fun,” Apple said on the above-mentioned iTunes page. The message also appears in the evidence-screenshot taken by the folks at MacRumors. Features like MMS and tethering will not be available for iPod touch users, yet new enhancements, like the ability to buy movies, TV shows and audiobooks via Wi-Fi, right on the device, are.

A Stereo Bluetooth capability will also allow iTouch users to enjoy such content with compatible headphones, while Peer to Peer (P2P) gaming “will make it easy to play head-to-head with a friend — whether your friend is sitting next to you or across the country,” the Mac maker explains. The Landscape Keyboard is also a new feature present in iPhone OS 3.0. It should provide a better experience for those using their iPod touch to write emails, notes, etc.

We’re keeping a close eye on iTunes for the official iPhone OS 3.0, ensuring that our readers can grab the new software the instant it’s available.
