As revealed in the PDF user manual for its new Magic Mouse, a software update is required to take full advantage of the peripheral’s magical features. Available for both Mac OS X 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6, Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 is a free download recommended for happy owners of Apple’s newest mouse.

Talking about Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 for Leopard and Snow Leopard, Apple stresses that you must “install this software to take advantage of your Magic Mouse special features.” According to the Cupertino-based Mac maker, Mac OS X 10.5.8 or Mac OS X 10.6.1 is required before installing this update, depending on what OS you are running.

As noted above, arriving in tandem with new Support documentation for the new Macs was also the user manual for Apple’s Magic Mouse in PDF format. Available as a free download from the Mac maker’s website, the “Apple Magic Mouse – User Guide” (PDF) revealed that either Mac OS X 10.6.2 or a different software update would be required for taking advantage of all of the functions that its Magic mouse was capable of.

“Your wireless Apple Magic Mouse comes with two AA batteries installed and uses Bluetooth technology to connect to your Mac,” the user guide for Magic Mouse reads. “Read these instructions to set up your mouse with a new Mac, replace your USB mouse, pair your mouse with a different Mac, and replace the batteries.” Apple then goes to note that, “[In order] to use your Apple Magic Mouse and its full range of features, [you must] update your Mac to Mac OS X version 10.5.8 or later and install the Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0; or update to Mac OS X version 10.6.2 or later.”

Currently, Mac OS X 10.6.2 is still under development. Besides adding full compatibility with Apple’s new mouse, it also aims to fix a serious bug eating away users’ data in very rare cases.

Posted on October 27, 2009, the Wireless Mouse Software Update is a hefty 63.92MB download that requires either Mac OS X 10.5.8 on Leopard Machines, or Mac OS X 10.6.1 on behalf of those running Snow Leopard. Supported languages include the usual (Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Chinese, Japanese and Korean).
