Accessory makers must use these documents to create compatible hardware

A PDF document titled “Case Design Guidelines for Apple Devices” has been updated following the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c with specifications pertaining to the two handsets, targeting accessory makers.

Companies that make a living off protective iPhone cases always need to take into account both the exterior and the interior design of a new generation of iPhones. And this time is no different.

Apple has put forth new schematics to help case makers determine where to cover up the new iPhones, and where to leave the original design intact.

For instance, iPhone 5s case makers now need to create a slightly larger outline around the Home button, because of the phone’s new fingerprint sensor.

iPhone 5c case makers need to be careful not to obstruct the phone’s radio “windows” with metal. Reading the schematics is imperative, as the 5c doesn’t use any visible antenna windows on its outer shell (like the iPhone 5s).
