A support document posted online by Apple acknowledges an issue experienced by owners of Mac Pro (Mid 2010) systems equipped with an ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card.

The Cupertino, California-based giant has learned that some Mac Pro owners notice the display connected to their system is black after startup.

This happens after the user installs an ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card, according to knowledge-based article TS3622.

“This issue can happen even if the computer is operating normally and the display is connected properly (using one video adaptor),” Apple explains.

“Your Mac Pro (Mid 2010) may respond normally when you access it through a local network from another computer,” it adds.

The resolution is fairly simple, going by Apple’s description.

As it happens, the ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card has two power cable ports

According to the Mac maker, “both power cables must be connected to display video on a connected display.”

Apple posts the following piece of text as “additional information”:

“The ATI Radeon HD 5770 that comes standard in Mac Pro (Mid 2010) computers uses only one power cable. You can use two ATI Radeon HD 5770 cards by using one power cable for each card inside Mac Pro (Mid 2010).”

On July 27, 2010 Apple unveiled a new Mac Pro line with up to 12 processing cores and up to 50 percent greater performance than the previous generation.

The tower Mac features the latest quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors, ATI graphics and the option for up to four 512GB solid state drives (SSD).

Every Mac Pro ships with Apple’s Magic Mouse. Customers can also order Apple’s new Magic Trackpad as an option.

The system primarily targets the most demanding consumers and professionals, as it delivers amazing performance and expandability.
