Could it be possible that an 8K iMac is on its way?

This week brings us a rather interesting reveal we weren't really prepared for. LG has posted a press release advocating for 8K displays, but along sentences praising sharpness, we can spot an interesting piece of information.

LG Display already showed a 98-inch 8K UHD display back at CES 2015, and now the Korean display manufacturer explains that it managed to improve the brightness of its 55-inch 8K UHD panel with 7,680 x 4,320 resolution and 500nit by implementing M+ panel technology that adds a white pixel to the existing RGB sub-pixel structure.

While 8K resolution sounds pretty mind blowing (most high-end television sets boast 4K displays today), the press release does provide us with another juicy detail.

Apple is supposedly prepping an 8K iMac

Apparently, LG and Apple have partnered up to produce an iMac with a super-high 8K resolution display later this year. LG says Apple has already announced the advent of this product, which probably translates into the Cupertino tech giant letting supplying partners know of its plans.

Last fall, Apple unveiled a 27-inch iMac that sported a super-high 5K resolution display packing a whopping 14.7 million pixels.

The fact that Apple would make a jump from 5K all the way to 8K in such little time seems quite implausible. It’s also a bit strange that a well-known manufacturer like LG would go ahead and reveal product plans ahead of their time.

Going back to LG, the display manufacturer is prophesying that use of 8K displays will eventually become quite widespread. As it turns out, back when BBC took on the broadcasting of the 2012 Olympics, they said that 8K resolution was the highest resolution that the human eye is capable of seeing (a debatable statement).

It is believed that 8K screens will put an end to the resolution discussion, while taking over the market in the process.

At the moment, Korea is preparing to offer an 8K service demonstration at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Given that the 8K demonstration is scheduled for 2018, we can’t stop but wonder if Apple will truly end up launching an 8K iMac later in 2015. We’re pretty skeptical to be honest, so you’d better take the information with a bit grain of salt.
