Apple's Job Opportunities section lists an opening for a Mac OS X SW Dev Manager, Network Authentication and Security. The team to be led is responsible for developing software for embedded devices (such as the iPhone), among others. According to the job summary, the company is already working on a “growing” number of such devices.

An embedded system is a special-purpose computer system designed to perform one or a few dedicated functions. While personal computers can do many different tasks depending on programming, embedded devices such as the iPhone and the iPod touch are faced with real-time computing constraints.

Apple reveals that “The Mac OS X software team is looking for an exceptionally talented software engineering manager to lead Apple’s Core OS Network Authentication and Security team. This team is responsible for the development and support of key networking infrastructure for Mac OS X.”

“Specific areas of responsibility include VPN, 802.1X, and related Internet protocols, network security protocols and applications, and network configuration management,” the company explains. “The software developed by the networking team runs on a broad spectrum of platforms, including Macs and Windows, and from servers down to a growing number of embedded devices including iPhone.”

As such, Apple needs a Mac OS X SW Dev Manager for Network Authentication and Security. Job responsibilities include:

• Leadership and management of a team of talented networking engineers in a fast-paced and demanding development environment; • Ownership of the network authentication and security technology roadmap for Mac OS X; • Creating and promoting a development environment that encourages innovation and sets high standards for quality and productivity; • Working cross-functionally with other software, hardware, .Mac, marketing, and support teams to provide the best networking solutions for Apple’s customers; • Identifying and mitigating risks in development activities; • Championing networking throughout Apple, and the industry; • Strengthening the team by hiring and retaining top-flight network engineering talent.

The company planning to expand its line of embedded offerings notes that the position is not for entry-level management. In fact, “The candidate must already have significant experience leading a successful networking software or similar engineering team,” Apple reveals. A hands-on leader with a very technical approach is required to occupy this position within the company.

While Apple lists a minimum of four-year experience managing a network software development team as “required,”  solid skills in working in an embedded environment as well as in managing remote development staff are two great pluses. Direct experience with VPN and related technologies and protocols, a proven track record of successful and timely networking product delivery, and evidence of driving technical innovation are just more goals required from the candidate.
