Logic Pro and Logic Express get improved overall stability and performance

Users of Apple’s professional music production software, Logic, have new updates to install for their respective Pro or Express versions. Update 9.1.8 patches a truckload of errors discovered in both branches.

“Logic Pro 9.1.8 is an update to Logic Pro 9 (which is part of Logic Studio 2),” Apple says. “Logic Pro 9.1.8 is also the version of Logic Pro available for purchase on the Mac App Store.”

The update addresses a serious issue where Save As sometimes ended in an alert dialog in Logic 9.1.7. Not being able to save the next summer hit might be a tad frustrating, to say the least.

Additional content downloads now behave correctly when installing Logic on OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion, according to the changelog.

On the audio front, update 9.1.8 fixes an issue that caused an Airplay dialog to repeatedly appear, and relaunching the audio driver now applies changes made to the buffer size reliably.

A couple of Performance and Stability tweaks are mentioned regarding performance issues when using plug-ins that provide frequent graphic feedback.

Also, a specific bug that could cause an abnormally large monitoring delay after a Mac wakes from sleep was fixed.

In the instrument department, 9.18 fixes an issue with ES2 that could create distortion when a sidechain was used as the modulation source, and Tuner now responds consistently when used with plug-ins that introduce latency (in a channel strip).

Also notable in the same area, the MIDI channel is no longer changed when adding Aux outputs with regions on the track, when used with multi-output software instruments.

For multi-output instances of Kontakt that are migrated from earlier versions to Kontakt 5, Logic now properly maintains Aux assignments. Finally, the update corrects an issue where deleting tracks took longer than expected if Melodyne Editor was inserted on a track.

A few specific changes are mentioned in the release notes for Logic Express 9.1.8, including fixes for issues with ES2 that could create distortion when a sidechain was used as the modulation source.
