Although still fond of tying everything down to its hardware, Apple has decided to offer free licensing for devices using the Mini DisplayPort standard. Developers and hardware makers eager to build peripherals that work with Apple's new standard must apply first for an evaluation license, and a separate implementation license. As soon as Apple agrees to the latter, the applicant can use the standard for free.

Macnn points out that hardware makers should express particular interest in Apple's proposal, most likely for developing monitors and / or video cards.

The recently-spotted message posted on the Developer Connection segment of Apple's website, reveals that “Apple provides developers the opportunity to license and use Apple software, technologies and Apple trademarks to build successful products. Regardless of whether your product will be sold, used internally, or bundled with other products, if you wish to use Apple software, technologies and/or trademarks, you need to obtain a license from Apple to do so,” the company explains.

“Apple's Software Licensing Department works with developers, user groups, and others to ensure they are properly licensed for many of Apple technologies and trademarks,” says the Mac maker.

Talking about licensing the Mini DisplayPort Connector in particular, Apple reveals that the new connector is a “small form factor connector, designed to fully support the VESA DisplayPort protocol.” According to Apple, the standard should prove particularly useful on small systems, “such as portable computers, or to support multiple connectors on reduced height add-in cards.”

Apple has posted the dimensional specifications of the plug and receptacle mating interface online, accompanied by a recommended PCB landing pad. However, to download the document containing the Mini DisplayPort Connector Dimensions, users must agree to the Mini DisplayPort Evaluation License. An additional Mini DisplayPort Connector Implementation License is also free, but necessary to download and agree to, in order to gain full rights to use the standard. If approved by Apple, the license becomes effective instantly.
