Company charges $149 / €114 for service independent of AppleCare+

Apple has kicked off a program which aims to save the company $1 billion / €765 million annually by avoiding to wholly replace iPhones with damaged screens.

Instead (and I’m guessing you know where this is going), Apple will repair iPhones in-store for customers who shattered their devices’ screens. No word on whether the policy applies to other kinds of damages, but it’s safe to assume that it does.

The repair will not be free, but customers can opt to have their phone serviced in exchange for $149 / €114 with or without AppleCare+, a service which provides replacement advantages.

Apple also recently announced that its AppleCare division was undergoing some changes to its Service Training and Certification program.

The update is set to go into effect June 23, 2013, and is based on feedback from the field, Apple said. The company promises “a simpler and easier way to create and maintain service technician credentials.”
