In an email sent out to registered iOS developers, Apple reveals that users who have already purchased an app are now able to download previous versions.

The change in policy allows customers “to use your app with older devices that may no longer be supported by the current version,” Apple says.

Developers who do not with to have previous versions of an app available can manage availability in the Rights and Pricing section of the Manage Your Apps module on iTunes Connect. Apple offers some examples of scenarios where a developer might want to switch off backwards compatibility: “…for example due to a usability or legal issue,” says the Mac maker.

Developers looking to learn more about this change are told to refer to the iTunes Connect Developer Guide. The email in question, sent out to iOS developers worldwide, is signed “The App Store team.”
