In the next major release of OS X, Apple is doing away with the standalone Software Update application designed to check for system and application updates. Software Update will still be available, but it will be moved in the Mac App Store application.

Apple provided Pocket-lint with an explanation for the reasons behind the move, during a briefing for the new developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion.

The Cupertino company specifically told the site that “the new method will offer updates to the OS and Apple applications in a similar way to how it does on iOS via the App Store, but in this case via the Mac App Store.”

OS X Mountain Lion will be released to the public in late Summer 2012, Apple has confirmed.
