Apple did not really listen to the European Union requests to launch a micro-USB iPhone, but it may soon step it up with a lightning to reversible USB connector cable.

The European Union has decided that Apple and all other phone manufacturers have to follow the rule that says their devices have to get the same charging port. The decision was taken back when the iPhone 4s was released and Apple had to release the iPhone 5 as a device that will comply with that standard.

Surprisingly enough, Apple went on its way with the iPhone connector, releasing the lightning cable. A reversible connector, smaller that mini-USB and more versatile than any other standard on the market. Since the iPhone 5 release, Apple has included the same connector in the iPad Air, retina display iPad mini, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

The company did however made sure they comply with the European regulations by releasing a lightning to micro-USB adapter. This can be purchased separately for the users that only want to use one charger for all their devices. It was sold only in Europe, and the iOS devices users seem to be uninterested of the new adapter and preferred the iPhone cable.

Apple has decided to follow that trend and launch another connector that may prove widely popular. The cable will have at one end the same lightning connector and at the other end a reversible USB connector.

According to a report coming from China and made public by a french blog, this new cable is made by Foxconn, long time Apple supplier and iPhone manufacturer.

The cited source has posted several photos of the new connector. The new cable will have an outer metal casing, the size of a regular USB port. However, you can insert it in the USB port the way you want and it will still work. This is not the new USB type-C connector that was just presented, but rather Apple's own interpretation of the USB Port.

Apple may also reveal a new type of lightning port that may be used as a high definition audio port along with devices such as Beats high-end headphones or the tech giant's upgraded EarPods.

Apple is expected to launch the new iPhone 6 in less than a month. The device may come out in two different screen sizes - a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch one. The team from Cupertino should also announce a new version of iPad mini and a follow-up to the iPad Air.
