Apple may not equip the iPad mini with a Retina display just yet, according to sources in the tech industry, as the Cupertino giant is afraid such a product might cannibalize the sales of bigger iPads.

A DigiTimes report dishing out some information on new developments in Apple’s supply chain reveals that Apple is planning to release a redesigned iPad 5, as well as a second-generation iPad mini 2.

The only problem with the latter device is that the company is undecided on whether to slap a Retina display onto it or not. The reason? Fear of cannibalization. You know, when one product is so popular that it steals another product’s show.

Per the original report: “The sources revealed that Apple has had an internal debate on whether to use Retina display technology in its next-generation iPad mini because it is afraid the device may take away sales from the iPad.”

Another thing they’re pondering over there in Cupertino is whether to use oxide TFT or LTPS backplane technology. Which is all the same to us, as long as the thing looks and works great when it hits the market.
