Still in the project phase

Apple has patented their idea for detecting when a mobile phone has been stolen and for protecting the data inside. This initiative comes as a solution for the large number of phones that are stolen on a daily basis.

Apple's idea can be applied only to iPhone, as this is the only mobile communication device that this company has produced until now. Taking into consideration iPhone's price, ranging from USD500 to USD600, it would be a tragedy for its user to find out one day that it was stolen. For this reason, first of all, Apple's patent will most probably receive high appreciation from mobile phone users.

Apple's concept for making objects impossible to steal has the advantage that it can be applied in the case of notebooks and other portable electronics that need extra protection from being stolen.

The system works quite easy. Whenever an object is stolen, the movement becomes much different from the normal one that the user applies to the mobile phone. Not only that, but the unusual behavior in the case of a theft can be set apart from an accidental movement. A thief will make rapid sustained movements, as well as unintentional bumps and drops.

After a certain amount of monitoring, the device can tell whether it is being used by a burglar or by its original user. As a safety solution, the device will automatically lock itself and ask for a password in order to return to normal.

Currently, the motion-sensing feature has not been integrated on any of the iPhones that have been produced, or on any other devices, for what counts. Still, signs of developing such a possibility are being silently announced through the introduction of the accelerometer sensor. This is also used on the iPhone for making the display image auto-rotate when the owner tilts the device on its side for better viewing images and video recordings.
