14 DAY TRIAL // Apple is instructing AppleCare technicians to investigate signs of liquid damage more thoroughly when presented with a malfunctioning iPod. The company is known to have strict rules regarding damaged devices as a result of contact with moisture, but it seems a few amendments were in order.
Whether or not this has anything to do with iPods turning on their Liquid Contact Indicators in what may be considered permissible amounts of moisture, both Apple Store employees and AppleCare Repair Center staffers have specific guidelines, should they suspect liquid damage.
If an iPhone or iPod has been damaged by liquid, the service for such liquid damage is not covered by the Apple’s one year limited warranty or even an AppleCare Protection Plan.
It is also known that iPhone models and iPod models that were assembled after 2006 have built-in Liquid Contact Indicators that will show whether the device has been in contact with water or a liquid containing water.
Until now, employees were given the green light to conclude that an iPod was damaged by water, or another liquid, should they spot an activated LCI within the headphone jack.
Now, AppleCare staffers are being told the following, according to a screenshot published by The Boy Genius Report:
“AppleCare has changed the way it screens iPods for liquid damage. When an Apple Retail Store or AppleCare Repair Center checks for liquid damage, if the Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) inside the headphone jack has been activated, the iPod must be inspected for additional signs of liquid damage.”
As before, unless a customer admits to accidentally damaging their iPod, final determination about liquid damage must be made by an Apple Retail Store or AppleCare Repair Center.”
