Hoping to make one generous computing enthusiast happy, Ebay seller "zieglerc" has put up for auction a prototype model of the Macintosh Portable, the first Mac "luggable" computer from late 1989. The listing shows a starting bid of US $1,750.00 with the last price challenge being allowed on December 31, 2010, 12:28:32 PST).

The seller touts the machine as “an absolutely mint, flawless, clean prototype Macintosh Portable that was not intended for sale.”

Indeed, a label found on the bottom of the computer reveals that it was intended for demonstration purposes only and that it did not include the necessary certifications.

The seller points out that the prototype unit also includes the original soft-shell case in perfect condition, albeit a tad dusty, he notes, as well as a system update floppy, the original power adapter, and a signed form showing that the unit was checked out of Apple Computer in the month of August some 20 years ago.

Sadly, the system does not boot because of the old lead-acid battery (which is original and currently installed) which cannot hold a charge any longer.

Yet, the tinkerer who manages to snag this piece of Apple history will most likely do everything in his power to provide a powering unit.

No one would resist the temptation of trying to boot this thing up, knowing it is in perfect working condition.

zieglerc explains that Macintosh Portables cannot boot without a usable battery, therefore the owner may have to come up with a replica of that battery.

Surely there’s one company out there that specializes in crafting custom made batteries. Bidders, or soon-to-be bidders can start their search here.

“It would appear that a collector with a little more time on his hands could get the machine booting up with little effort, but unfortunately, I simply don't have the time to invest,” zieglerc claims.

He hopes “this little piece of Apple history will make a vintage computing enthusiast very, very happy.”
