Apple has published a knowledge base article to list the Fibre Channel storage hardware compatible with Xsan, the company’s long-discontinued server computers, and OS X software.

In a KB document posted on May 21, Apple points out that Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard, as well as earlier versions, supports Apple Xserve RAID.

Also supported by the respective OS versions is the Promise VTrak E-Class RAID Subsystem. The company points out that customers need at least Mac OS X v10.5.2 running on their Mac for support.

For OS X Lion v10.7 and OS X Mountain Lion v10.8, customers can employ “[all] storage devices qualified for use in Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier,” with the company instructing users to scroll back up for the list of compatible devices.

Also supported by Lion and Mountain Lion are ALUA-compliant Fibre Channel RAID systems, says the Cupertino giant.

The Mac maker also includes a handy note that states, “OS X Lion and later include support for the Asymmetric Logical Unit Access (ALUA) standard for multipathing and failover. Support for this industry standard multipathing implementation allows Lion and newer Xsan systems to be used with a wide variety of Fibre Channel RAID storage arrays.”
