A new iOS firmware update tasked with fixing an issue with 480p playback, and video re-downloading, is now available for download from Apple’s servers. Labeled version 4.1.1 Build 8C154, the IPSW file is applicable by accessing Settings -> General -> Software Update on the Apple TV using the Apple Remote.

According to a Support document which talks about Apple TV (2nd generation) software updates, Apple TV Software Update 4.1.1 features a TV resolution fix and a download fix.

The former “addresses an issue that causes some high-definition TVs to incorrectly display at 480p,” Apple claims. The latter, “an issue that may cause a movie or TV show to be re-downloaded.”

Apple is at its second incremental update for Apple TV second-generation customers. The 4.1.1 release supersedes the Apple TV 4.1 software update, which delivered AirPlay (allowing videos, photos, and music to be streamed to the set-top box from iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch), the VoiceOver accessibility feature, and connectivity and performance fixes.

Apple TV users can rent thousands of commercial free, HD TV episodes on iTunes for 99 cents, with up to 30 days to start watching and then 48 hours to finish—or watch multiple times.

Customers can rent movies in HD, with most new releases available on the same day they are released on DVD, Apple said in September, following the launch of its second-generation “hobby”.

Apple TV streams content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe, as well as music, photos and videos from PCs and Macs to an HD TV via AirPlay.

The new Apple TV has built-in HDMI, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, as well as an internal power supply, and features silent, cool, and low power operation in a four-inch square enclosure.

The device ships with Apple’s standard, seven-button aluminum Apple Remote.
