Apple has launched an updated version of its Remote iOS application that works with Macs and the Apple TV to make improvements when connecting to iTunes or Apple TV, to add a "skip back" button when playing video, and to make performance improvements.

Remote works with all iDevices, including the iPad, and allows users to control iTunes and Apple TV using their iOS-based portable gadget over their Wi-Fi network.

“Choose playlists, songs, and albums as if you were right in front of your computer or Apple TV,” Apple says. “From anywhere in your home change a song, pick a playlist or browse through your entire library.”

The app comes in handy especially when there’s typing involved.

With the Apple TV's included Apple Remote, users have to choose characters from an inconvenient interface by making simultaneous successions of button hits, whereas with the Remote app, they can easily tap out a title by using the iOS virtual QWERTY keyboard.

Apple also notes that “Remote has been fully optimized to take advantage of the large screen real estate of the iPad as well as the spectacular Retina display in the iPhone 4, and new iPod touch.”

Version 2.1.1 delivers improvements when connecting to iTunes or Apple TV, the addition of a "skip back" button when playing video, and stability and performance improvements, Apple said.

The features and tweaks included in version 2.1 are also incorporated in this release. According to the Cupertino tech giant, those include:

• AirPlay video support to control iTunes on your computer to stream videos to an Apple TV • Internet radio control to play thousands of internet radio streams in iTunes on your computer • The ability to control iTunes on your computer to play Movies and TV shows that are rented from the iTunes Store • Addresses issues connecting to an iTunes library or Apple TV • Includes stability and performance improvements
