iTunes version 9.2.1 is now available for Mac and Windows users. According to Apple, the new release provides a number of important bug fixes. The new iTunes also fixes a security issue affecting Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later, Windows 7, Vista, XP SP2 or later, where visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

Over at the Downloads section of its web site, Apple lists the changes in iTunes 9.2.1 as follows:

About iTunes 9.2.1
iTunes 9.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

- Disables older versions of some incompatible third-party plug-ins
- Addresses minor issues with dragging and dropping items
- Addresses a performance issue when first syncing to some devices with iTunes 9.2
- Addresses an issue upgrading to iOS 4 on an iPhone or iPod touch with encrypted back-ups
- Addresses other issues that improve stability and performance

The new iTunes version incorporates all the improvements delivered in iTunes 9.2. These include the ability to sync content with iPhone 4, sync and read books with iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 and iBooks 1.1, the ability to organize and sync PDF documents as books, and to organize apps on iOS 4 home screens into folders using iTunes. Additionally, iTunes 9.2 brought faster back-ups while syncing an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4, and album artwork improvements to make artwork appear more quickly when exploring a library.

Finally, Apple reveals that a security issue has been patched in iTunes 9.2.1. According to the Mac maker, “A buffer overflow exists in the handling of ‘itpc:’ URLs. Accessing a maliciously crafted ‘itpc:’ URL may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.” Apple has addressed the bug through improved bounds checking, according to a support document posted on its web site. The company credits Clint Ruoho of Laconic Security for finding and reporting the hole.
