New versions of the iPhone Configuration Utility for Mac OS X and Windows are available from Cupertino.

The purpose of the Macintosh release remains a mystery, if we’re to look at the note posted by Apple to the Downloads section of its web site.

On the Windows side, however, Apple clearly outlines that iPhone Configuration Utility 3.1 is recommended for those managing devices running iOS 4.0 or later, as it adds support for several key features delivered by the company in the newest major release of the iOS.

For Macs used to manage iPhones in the Enterprise, Apple posts the standard description containing the purpose of iPhone Configuration Utility, noting that it “lets you easily create, maintain, encrypt, and install configuration profiles, track and install provisioning profiles and authorized applications, and capture device information including console logs.”

The current version of the Phone Configuration Utility 3.2 for Mac OS X is 3.2. Softpedia readers can download the new release here. It requires Mac OS X 10.6.

On the Windows front, Apple sheds more light on why an update was necessary to the iPhone Configuration Utility.

For starters, the Mac maker reveals that it is recommended for those managing devices running iOS 4.0 or later.

After a short lecture configuration profiles, Cupertino adds that “iPCU version 3.1 [for Windows] adds support for new Mobile Device Management (MDM) features introduced in iOS 4 and enables wireless delivery of configuration profiles.”

Additionally, the update delivers “support for Cisco AnyConnect and Juniper Networks SSL VPN clients, CardDAV, multiple Exchange accounts and SAN support using Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP),” Apple states.

As usual, Apple directs those interested in integrating iOS devices with their enterprise systems to www.apple.com/support/iphone/enterprise/.

iPhone Configuration Utility 3.1 for Windows can be downloaded here for systems running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, or Windows 7, and .NET 3.5 SP1.
