Apple has released an update for owners of a second-generation Apple TV patching a few issues, including one that caused the screen to flicker or display bad color on some TV models.

According to the support document Apple systematically updates to outline the latest changes in the Apple TV software, Apple TV Software Update 4.2.1 includes the following changes:

TV compatibility - Addresses issues that may cause the screen to flicker or display incorrect color on some older TVs.

Wake from sleep - Addresses an issue where Apple TV may not wake up from sleep.

Audio - Addresses an issue where audio may not be heard on some TV models after switching from another input.

Stability and performance - Apple TV Software Update 4.2.1 includes stability and performance fixes for Apple TV.

As before, Apple has done little to address the discrepancy between the advertised build number of the software update and the designation included in the full name of the IPSW file used to update the Apple TV’s firmware.

In what may become a confusing ordeal for those trying to keep track of Apple TV software updates, the IPSW version number is still at 3.4, though the build number has changed from 8F191m to 8F202.

To avoid any confusion, users should learn that the complete file name for Apple’s newest Apple TV software update is: AppleTV2,1_4.3_8F202_Restore.ipsw

According to Apple, these are the exact steps to properly update your Apple TV to the current software version:

1. Select Settings > General using your Apple Remote.

2. Click Update Software. At this time your Apple TV checks to see if an update is available and a download message should appear if an update is available.

3. Click Download and Install to start the download process (or Download Now on an Apple TV 1st generation with Apple TV software 1.x).

Important: Do not disconnect your Apple TV during the update process.   Download Apple TV 4.2.1 (4.3) Software Update (Free)
