Apple opens new section dedicated to offering free stuff

After axing 12 Days of Christmas and then iTunes Single of the Week, two well-liked promotions tied to the iTunes Store, Apple has fired up its generosity engines once more and launched a new section called Free on iTunes.

Don’t get your hopes up for AAA games making the list. It’s just songs and TV shows for now, and apparently the full-length TV episodes are not all free. Which is particularly disappointing, considering that this section touts itself as an all-you-can-get area.

What's available for download

Music wise, Apple is featuring the likes of Guster, Nude Beach, Robin Bacior, Houndmouth, Jauz, Machine Head, Michelle Chamuel, Jessica Hernandez, THUMPERS, Purity Ring, Rogue Wave, Washed Out, and others.

Full-length TV episodes are available from shows like Backstrom, 12 Monkeys, K.C. Undercover, The Musketeers, Eye Candy, Best New Restaurant, Bring It, Breaking Point, Kart Life, My Big Fat Fabulous Life, and Love, Lust or Run.

Follow this here link to reach the Free on iTunes section and enjoy browsing and consuming the content featured there. Remember that at least for the time being some of the shows there are actually not free to download (either by Apple’s mistake, or on purpose). We also expect Apple to refresh those lists on a weekly basis, perhaps even daily.

App Store left behind

The company has yet to take a similar approach with apps. Despite featuring Free, Paid and Top Grossing charts, there is no app section that purely advertises free apps in the way that Free on iTunes promotes music and TV shows.

However, something tells us that people who want free apps know exactly where and how to get them.
