This March 3, Apple launched a new and free iPhone app dubbed Seals Hero. Interestingly enough, this piece of news caught the attention of green group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

In case anyone was wondering why this happened, here is your answer: the app in question is intended to raise awareness about the yearly Canadian seal hunts, and hopefully get people to unite and try to put an end to them.

As the folks at Australia-based Maiko Enterprises put it, “Your mission is to save seals.”

“You will control Cid, a smart, energetic, non-violent animal rights activist who uses speed and intelligence to race against the clock to save as many seals as he can while avoiding a number of obstacles.”

Furthermore, “Seals Hero was created as a fun way to educate players about a serious issue and unite them worldwide against it.”

Apart from the fact that it educates folks about the horrors of Canada's annual seal slaughter, the game lets people know how it is exactly that they contact PETA and join the organization's ongoing fight against animal cruelty.

The animal rights activists hope that, with the help of this free iPhone app, they will be able to convince more people to join their cause and protest seal hunts in Canada.
