Via an ‘official’ tweet coming from @AppStore, Apple yesterday confirmed the availability of the App Store Twitter account, where fans can follow the updates to discover new apps, and learn of new offers.

News broke out yesterday that Apple had set up an official Twitter account for the App Store.

Appropriately named @AppStore, the service promises "official App Store tweets including our featured apps, exclusive offers, and more."

“Welcome to App Store on Twitter! Follow us to discover new apps, get exclusive offers, and share with friends,” reads Apple’s official announcement.

Many have long wished for a solution to get ‘notifications’ on the most recent App Store additions, and while the iTunes RSS feed does its bit, tweets are much more vocal, so to speak.

So far, only a few tweets have been sent out by whoever is handling the @AppStore account. Here are some examples:

Access low-fat, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free recipes galore with Whole Foods Market Recipes. http://tw.appstore.com/t24 5 hours ago

Currently, over 70,000 Twitter users have signed up to follow the App Store on Twitter.

For now, @AppStore appears to be tweeting only iOS releases and updates, but we can count on Apple to come up with a similar solution for Mac Apps in the near future.

The news comes amid Apple’s announcement that the venue hit 10 billion downloads.

The App Store offers more than 350,000 apps to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users in 90 countries around the world. 60,000 of those are native iPad apps.

App Store customers can choose from a wide range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference, and travel.
