Launched one day after the Mac OS X 10.6.7 had hit Apple’s Downloads section, Aperture 3.1.2 is available as a free update for all users of Apple’s professional photography software, Aperture 3.

According to a technical note on Apple’s Support site, Aperture 3.1.2 is tasked with improving overall stability and performance, as well as to deliver fixes in some specific areas of the software.

Main areas touched by the update include Aperture’s importing features, specifically that of importing a library from iPhoto.

Reliability and responsiveness when using brushes to apply adjustments is improved, while reconnecting referenced master images is fixed as well.

However, this is just scratching the surface as far as Aperture 3.1.2 is concerned.

Apple tucks away the full release notes in a knowledge-based article, buried deeper on the company's Support site where the complete list of enhancements and code corrections is made available.

For example, for iPhoto compatibility, Aperture 3.1.2 resolves an issue that could cause Aperture to quit unexpectedly when importing large iPhoto libraries.

Aperture now correctly handles albums contained in folders when importing iPhoto 9.1.1 libraries, and improves reliability when importing iPhoto 9 libraries that include slideshows containing text slides.

Also concerning the use of Aperture in tandem with iPhoto, RAW images imported from iPhoto 9 libraries will no longer show the Reprocess brick in Adjustments, according to Apple.

Importing is now more reliable by means of addressing issues that could cause Aperture to stop responding when attempting to process damaged images.

Specifically, Olympus E-5 images with a 3:4 aspect ratio now import with the correct rotation, Apple outlines.

Fixed issues listed under ‘Library’ include that preventing referenced images from being reconnected, and Aperture quitting unexpectedly when switching libraries.

‘Adjustments’ fixes have been made by resolving issues with Macs becoming unresponsive when using brushes, issues that could cause Aperture to quit unexpectedly when using Retouch, and one bug that could cause the white balance value for certain RAW images to be displayed incorrectly.

Finally, Apple lists ‘other’ fixes. These include:

- Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture to quit unexpectedly when panning a zoomed image. - Addresses compatibility of exported XMP Sidecar files with third-party applications. - Resolves an issue that could cause Aperture to quit unexpectedly when using Align to Beats in a slideshow.
