Cupertino, California-based Apple introduced today a new version of its router with integrated hard drive called Time Capsule. The new flavor doubles the available storage capacity of the previously available model, rising it to two terabytes. The price for the new, top-of-the-line model has been set at $499, yet the company has also operated a few changes in the series.

For starters, we should mention the fact that the smaller 500GB flavor has been slashed, and that the only available iterations are the 1TB and the 2TB ones. At the same time, users might like to learn that the price tag for the 1TB Time Capsule model has been lowered to $299, as its price point has been taken by the new variant.

The 2TB Time Capsule version has been rumored to be on its way to the market since April this year, as a picture of the box surfaced back then on ClubMac. Most of you might already know that, earlier this year, Apple launched new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule iterations that sported dual-band support.

The newly released models came with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz dual-band networking capabilities, and offered connectivity to iPhones and other 802.11b/g devices that worked on the 2.4 GHz spectrum, while also delivering an enhanced throughput on the 5GHz band for 802.11n devices such as notebooks or Apple TV.

Time Capsule can be used to connect the AirPort Extreme with a hard drive, so as to offer a backup solution for the computers that feature Time Machine running under Leopard. The router with integrated hard drive can be used with both Mac and Windows computers, yet the Time Machine software solution is only available for Macs.

At the same time, Apple also offered MobileMe subscribers the possibility to download Time Capsule drives over the Internet. Not to mention the fact that the company introduced a new feature, called Guest Network, that enabled users to set up a new network so that friends would be able to access the Internet without receiving a WiFi password.
