Cupertino doesn’t want its digital assistant working on non-4S hardware

iPhone owners hacking their devices to use Apple’s personal assistant app, Siri, are reporting that Cupertino is thwarting their attempts through the addition of a file that bars any communication between the Siri app and the server side.

Specifically, Apple is disabling use of Spire, a popular Siri port designed for unsupported devices. The iPhone 4S is the only Apple iPhone currently capable of running Siri officially, and perhaps legally too.

According to a report by RedmondPie, Spire installs the necessary files of Apple’s Siri but requires a server host and a legit iPhone 4S certificate. To cut off all access to these circumventing measures, “Apple seems to have added a ‘SetActivationToken’ which stops Spire right in its tracks,” the site reveals.

Hackers are reportedly working to turn things back to normal, and they’ve already come up with a small fix, but it requires a bit of tinkering on the user’s end.
