Effective June 6, 2011, MobileMe has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge, Apple has officially announced. However, starting with July, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.

Apple explains in a Support document dating June 6 that a new MobileMe transition is going down.

The technology giant reveals that iCloud, the new suite of Internet services announced during the WWDC 2011 keynote, is the replacement of MobileMe.

The service not only brings a host of cool cloud features, it also engulfs everything that MobileMe ever offered.

“Apple has announced a new service called iCloud which will be available this fall and free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users,” the company states on its Support site.

“When you sign up for iCloud, you'll be able to keep your me.com or mac.com email address and move your MobileMe mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service,” reads the announcement.

Customers are being ensured that more details and instructions will be provided on how to make the move when the free iCloud service becomes available in fall.

To make things perfectly clear for those who try to hop on board at this late hour, Apple stresses that “You can no longer create a new 60-day trial account or start a new subscription using a code contained in a MobileMe box.”

Those who have a Family Pack subscription will still be able to create new family member accounts.

Also starting June 6, 2011, users who wish to upgrade their Individual account to a Family Pack or purchase additional storage for their MobileMe account will have their hands tied.

Finally, Apple will also refund any MobileMe purchase for those who haven’t yet punched in the activation code.
