Cupertino mistakenly posts new iPhone listing ahead of event

Apple apparently just leaked its own iPhone announcement with an 'iPhone 4S' listing discovered minutes ago on the Japanese version of its web site (screenshot above).

For months the tech media has been on and on about what new iPhone Apple was set to introduce come fall 2011, and while many were indeed expecting an iPhone 4S, just as many will be disappointed if this is the only new thing out of Cupertino today.

The screen capture I've posted above for your viewing pleasure also seems to confirm there will be a new iPod nano released today.

As noted here, Apple has also prematurely posted images for the iPhone 4S in black and white. The handset appears to be identical to the CDMA iPhone 4.

I sincerely hope that apple's 'Let's talk iPhone' event yields more than just silly upgrades to the existing iPhone and iPod lineup. Speaking of which, check with this here page for the full scoop. It's about to go down.

Update: Apple Japan says iPhone 4S will ship October 14th.
