Apple has acknowledged a rare issue that can cause the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) or MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010) to stop responding during startup or operation, following with an EFI Firmware Update for affected customers.

A note posted on the Support / Downloads area of Apple’s web site reveals that MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.9 is recommended for all 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010 models.

“The update resolves a rare issue that may cause the system to freeze during startup or intermittently stall during operation, and it improves compatibility with external displays,” technicians in Cupertino assert.

“The MacBook Pro EFI Update will update the EFI firmware on your MacBook Pro,” Apple explains.

The company advises users to have their computer's power cord connected and plugged into a working power source when performing the installation of the EFI update.

“When your MacBook Pro restarts a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update,” Apple informs.

“It will take several minutes for the update to complete. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your MacBook Pro during this update,” the company warns.

Those who are unsure whether they need Apple’s MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.9 can check their computer's EFI Boot ROM or SMC firmware version from the Apple () menu, by choosing About This Mac.

Once there, users of a 15-inch or 17-inch MacBook Pro (shipped in mid 2010) must click More Info, access Contents and select Hardware. The version information should be located in the pane on the right.

Posted August 26, 2010, the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.9 weighs in at 2.16 MB and requires Mac OS X 10.6.4.

Supported languages include Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, and Svensk.
