iCloud finally taking the reigns as Apple’s failed web suite succumbs

Just found out about Apple’s MobileMe off some old promo materials and you are looking to sign-up? Tough luck! The service is going to be dead in 30 days. But that’s ok, because Steve Jobs himself agreed that it sucked. Plus, we have iCloud now.

MobileMe is no longer accepting new subscribers as of... well, a long time now. If you’re a current member, you can still access everything as usual but only until June 30th, 2012. A final warning is now given to subscribers, and the screenshot above confirms it – in 30 days, MobileMe will be erased from existence.

This doesn’t mean that, as a MobileMe user, your investment has gone down the drain. The $99 annual service is moving most of its assets over to iCloud, Apple’s new suite of Internet services.

This one is much cheaper (5GB accounts are completely free of charge), and you get to keep your me.com email, too.

In fact, you get to keep a lot of your previous services, including Contacts, Calendar, Bookmarks, Find My iPhone, Back to My Mac, and others. The MobileMe tools that aren’t being transitioned to iCloud include iWeb publishing, Gallery, and iDisk (a type of Dropbox).

Best of all, iCloud includes a bunch of new services like iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream, Documents in the Cloud, automatic downloads and purchase history for apps and books, backup & restore, and others.

According to Apple, “after you move to iCloud or after June 30th, 2012, whichever comes first, syncing of Mac Dashboard widgets, keychains, Dock items, and System Preferences will no longer be available.” Users are told to read this article for details.

So if you liked what you heard about MobileMe, you’re going to love iCloud. Here’s everything you need to know about the new service.
