VEVO music video service gets go-ahead for Apple TV app

There’s no shortage of rumors that Apple is getting ready to take over our living rooms, and while it is taking longer than some have initially thought, the revolution is happening.

That’s what I’m left pondering seeing the Cupertino giant steadily build up an army of TV services (be they mostly web-based) in its crusade against traditional cable TV subscriptions.

Around the time Apple co-founder Steve Jobs passed away, a key takeaway from Walter Isaacson’s biography of the man revealed the company’s ambitious plans for revolutionizing the TV experience.

It’s no mystery that things have been progressing much slower than Apple would have wanted.

But with Tim Cook now running the show, the iPhone maker seems relentless in sourcing every ingredient to achieve the recipe envisioned by its late CEO.

What spurs this article is Apple’s reported invitation to VEVO, the popular music video service, to deliver a compelling Apple TV application.

This, following a dozen of such announcements in recent years. HBO GO & WatchESPN are just two of company’s latest additions to the iOS-powered puck-sized box.

According to All Things D, the free VEVO app is going to be a “lean-back” version of the service, featuring programmed channels, as well as on-demand programming.

“Vevo is building the app, after getting a go-ahead nod from Apple, and had planned on getting it on the device this month, according to people familiar with the project.”

Apps are Apple’s thing. The App Store is what got the iPhone off the ground, and it’s what got the iPad where it is today (namely, everywhere).

Apple seems to be taking on the cable companies using an age-old Jobsian strategy - if you can’t beat them at their game, create your own.

With media consumers turning to TV-viewing alternatives such as the iPad, Apple is positioning itself to become the first company to deliver the most comprehensive TV experience without actually selling you a screen.

And if you take into account Apple’s efforts to get iOS to play nice with game controllers, it’s starting to look pretty messy not just for the cable operators, but also for the companies that sell game consoles.
