So far, Apple has let the iPhone speak for itself. The TV commercials do a wonderful job of showing off the device's features, both in a flashy way and in real life situations. After all, the great things about iPhone are readily apparent and there is little need to spell them out. But when it comes to other
channels, Apple is taking a very different approach.
The e-mail invitation sent by Apple to Apple eNews recipients reads:
On June 29, you should come meet us at an Apple Store. We'll bring iPhone, and you two can, well, talk. Get to know one another. Maybe even fall in love.
After all, iPhone has a lot to email home about. Offering up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback, iPhone combines three products into one small and lightweight handheld device. A revolutionary mobile phone. A widescreen iPod with touch controls. And it puts the Internet in your pocket with best-ever applications on a mobile phone for email, web, web-browsing, and maps.
Now, you may have been searching for your cell mate for a long time. But the wait's almost over. In just eight days, it'll be you and iPhone. Together at last.Unlike the TV ads, the e-mail is much more personal and also points out the recent improvements in battery life that make a big difference, but were not touched on in any of the TV spots. The innuendo in Apple's e-mail is quite palpable, the company clearly trying to paint the device as your cell phone significant other. However the phrase 'you may have been searching for your cell mate for a long time' was not the best of choices by far. Puns work both ways and this one, as amusing as it might be, works against the rest of the message. Then again, the iPhone is probably just as popular with the prison crowd.
