After witnessing its Discussions forums filling up with complaints about the iPhone 3G not being able to handle iOS 4, Apple has reportedly kicked off an investigation, telling the press that it is aware of these issues and looking into ways to solve them.

iPhone 3G was released in 2008, while iOS 4 was launched just over a month ago. The two year discrepancy between the hardware and the software is taking its toll on users of an old-generation device, with many complaining about short battery life, overheating handsets, or very slow response to commands. The Wall Street Journal’s Digit’s blog provides an example of such bad experience by quoting an Apple Discussions forum poster who wrote...

“This phone has gone from being a dream to constantly annoying me. Not a way to make friends. I would upgrade to an iPhone4, but I’m feeling pretty angry that Apple has forced my hand by making my 3G unusable.”

Softpedia itself picked up on the respective thread last week when it noted that there were literally thousands of reports from iPhone and iPod touch owners claiming iOS 4 was been nothing but trouble since they installed the new software. Commenting on the topic of "Slow iPhone 3G after iOS 4," poster tutin reported: “My 3G has been killed entirely by iOS4. Literally it takes 10 seconds to load up SMS, 10 seconds to launch the calendar, keyboard typing lags, mail application is slow, internet browser is almost unusable, I'm even UNABLE to hit the stop loading button quite often ! In two words - it's truly horrible. I'm installing now 4.01 and will see what gives.” Softpedia signaled last week that a report by TUAW seemed to confirm these issues, even with the recent iOS 4.0.1 software update from Apple.

Now, according to Digits, Apple is investigating reports iOS 4 is causing problems for users of the iPhone 3G. An Apple spokesperson reportedly said that the company was aware of these reports and that it was looking into the matter.

iOS 4.1 Beta 2, released to registered Apple developers earlier this week, seems to alleviate the reported issues on iPhone 3G handsets, although a public release is yet to be announced.
