Apple Investigating Slow iPhone 3G Reports After iOS 4.0

After witnessing its Discussions forums filling up with complaints about the iPhone 3G not being able to handle iOS 4, Apple has reportedly kicked off an investigation, telling the press that it is aware of these issues and looking into ways to solve them.

iPhone 3G was released in 2008, while iOS 4 was launched just over a month ago. The two year discrepancy between the hardware and the software is taking its toll on users of an old-generation device, with many complaining about short battery life, overheating handsets, or very slow response to commands. The Wall Street Journal’s Digit’s blog provides an example of such bad experience by quoting an Apple Discussions forum poster who wrote...

“This phone has gone from being a dream to constantly annoying me. Not a way to make friends. I would upgrade to an iPhone4, but I’m feeling pretty angry that Apple has forced my hand by making my 3G unusable.”

Softpedia itself picked up on the respective thread last week when it noted that there were literally thousands of reports from iPhone and iPod touch owners claiming iOS 4 was been nothing but trouble since they installed the new software. Commenting on the topic of "Slow iPhone 3G after iOS 4," poster tutin reported: “My 3G has been killed entirely by iOS4. Literally it takes 10 seconds to load up SMS, 10 seconds to launch the calendar, keyboard typing lags, mail application is slow, internet browser is almost unusable, I'm even UNABLE to hit the stop loading button quite often ! In two words - it's truly horrible. I'm installing now 4.01 and will see what gives.” Softpedia signaled last week that a report by TUAW seemed to confirm these issues, even with the recent iOS 4.0.1 software update from Apple.

Now, according to Digits, Apple is investigating reports iOS 4 is causing problems for users of the iPhone 3G. An Apple spokesperson reportedly said that the company was aware of these reports and that it was looking into the matter.

iOS 4.1 Beta 2, released to registered Apple developers earlier this week, seems to alleviate the reported issues on iPhone 3G handsets, although a public release is yet to be announced.

I am in that boat. Could it possibly be that people are seeing that apple is a design company and not a performance computing company? I am "locked" into apple with my iPod, iPhone, and iPad, but yeesh, this is rediculous. I have started carying two devices. the iPhone 3G and the Sprint EVO. It is nice to have a 4G iPad!

Apple, Get Your Da## act together!!!!

I completely concur with the iPhone 3G users quoted in the article. My phone's performance is altogether unacceptable. I am very disappointed in Apple, the company I once knew for superior products. If Apple doesn't fix this with a software update, I don't know what I'll do. My next phone will likely be an HTC if that happens. If this is some sort of "planned obsolescence" stunt, I'm not going along with it. If it's just a plain old screw up, it needs to be rectified. If I walked into a wireless store and got the free phone with the cheapest plan, that phone would certainly outperform mine. What's the point of having an iPhone under these circumstances?

Thank you for this. I am having the same slow response problem and feeling crazy since I have always loved my iPhone...now not so much. And I agree with the writer that I hate to pay Apple for this issue by buying a 4G (besides, I want a white one which they are having trouble producing). These are not good signs!

Hi Dr T,

You'll be interested to know that some iPhone 3G users are seeing improvements in iOS behavior since updating their firmware to version 4.0.2 (released just yesterday).

Read through this recent report (including the comments) and decide for yourself whether it's worth attempting to fix your trouble by updating to 4.0.2.

Hope this helps.

They did this on purpose I think, to make 3G owners upgrade.

They should at least give you a way to roll back versions. This is also pissing me off. I'll be checking reports of firmware upgrades before I do that again.

Same here, I'm very disappointed with the performance of my iPhone after installing iOS 4.0.2. I am certain Apple will rectify these issues quickly since the Droid is apparently gaining traction and becoming quite popular.

Comment #10 by: Downgrade? on 12 Sep 2010, 21:47 UTC reply to this comment

My 3g went from hero to zero in the time it took to upgrade it 4.0.2. Talk about upgrade! All I want to do now is to downgrade it to 3.x whatever, because this is just too annoying.
