Not only did Apple not scrub the shuffle line of iPods, the company introduced yet another generation of iPod shuffles at yesterday’s media event, combining elements from all versions of the player in one sleek aluminum enclosure.

Probably the best feature of all, however, is the price - at just $49, the 2GB ultra-wearable iPod shuffle fourth-generation is the most affordable iPod money can buy. The redesigned shuffle features both clickable “ring” buttons, and Apple’s VoiceOver technology, which should enable users to navigate their music and playlists even better now.

Notably, Apple’s new entry-level iPod has nearly 50 percent more battery life, according to a report on the company’s web site.

This translates into some 15 hours of continuous music playback on a single battery charge, Apple claims.

“We’re making the iPod shuffle even better by combining clickable buttons and VoiceOver technology, so users can find and enjoy their music without ever looking at their iPod shuffle,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

“With its all-aluminum enclosure and built-in clip the new iPod shuffle is a great workout companion, and at just $49 it's a great entry-level iPod that almost everyone can afford,” Mr. Jobs added.

Apple’s new iPod shuffle also supports Genius Mixes, the feature that automatically creates mixes from songs in a user’s music library based on algorithms that allow iTunes to see which songs go well with one another.

As with the rest of the updated iPod line, the fourth-gen iPod shuffle will be available to the public next week. Priced at $49 (US), the device ships in either a silver, blue, green, orange or pink enclosure.

In the box, customers will find the iPod shuffle, a pair of Apple Earphones, and the iPod shuffle USB cable.

To sync some music to their player, users will either need to use a Mac with a USB 2.0 port, Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later and iTunes 10 or later, or a Windows PC with a USB 2.0 port and Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 3) or later.
