Time Capsule, Apple’s 802.11n router + NAS drive, is now available in a 2TB (terabytes) form for the price of $499, the same as before, when the largest capacity available was of 1TB. Moreover, Apple has dropped the price for the latter, offering the 1TB Time Capsule for just $299.00 now.

Time Capsule is touted by Apple as being the perfect companion for Time Machine (Apple's automatic backup solution for Mac OS X), enabling users to get the best possible experience out of wirelessly backing up their hard drive. As Apple fans should know, the device is not only a great backup and storage environment, but also a Wi-Fi base station that enables as many as 50 other computers to surf the web, stream video, share photos, and more.

“Back up a lifetime's worth of memories with the Time Capsule, a wireless hard drive that works seamlessly with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard,” Apple says. “It’s also a full-featured 802.11n Wi-Fi base station with simultaneous dual-band support. Choose from 1TB and 2TB models,” the company tries to entice customers. On Apple’s web store, the main features of the 2TB Time Capsule are listed as follows (descriptions removed):

- Automatic backup with Time Machine; - Server-grade storage; - Easy wireless networking; - Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi; - Guest networking; - Wireless drive sharing; - Print without wires; - Strong security and access controls; - Works with iPhone, Apple TV, and more.

Time Capsule system requirements for Time Machine backups include a Macintosh computer with Mac OS X Leopard installed. For setup and administration, Time Capsule needs a Mac computer with Mac OS X v.10.4 or later, a CD drive, and Ethernet or wireless networking capabilities. On the PC front, users will need to run Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista, and to pack the aforementioned drive and networking requirements.

Upon purchasing Time Capsule 2TB / 1TB, customers receive (in the box) the following items: Time Capsule, CD with AirPort Utility (Mac and Windows), AirPort Disk Utility for Mac OS X v10.4 and Windows, 802.11n Enabler for Mac OS X v10.4, and Bonjour for Windows, power cord, printed and electronic documentation.

Remember, the new 2TB version of Time Capsule retails for $499.00. Those in need of just one terabyte can acquire the device for just $299.00 now. Unfortunately, the 500GB Time Capsule can only be found now on Apple’s clearance / refurbished section, where it retails for $199.00.
