Apple has released new updates for Mac OS X users, one of which addresses some compatibility issues in QuickTime. 7.5.5 is still the current version of Apple's multimedia framework. The update is available for all Mac users running Mac OS X 10.5.5. Apple's QuickTime 7 delivers outstanding multi-channel audio, using up to 24 channels.

On its Support page, Apple reveals that the Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.5.5 improves QuickTime compatibility with iChat. The company points out that this release is for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Leopard users with QuickTime 7.5.5 only. Therefore, Mac OS X 10.5.5 and QuickTime 7.5.5 are actual requirements for the update.

The new Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.5.5 includes all the languages Apple usually supports, including Deutsch, English, Français, Japanese, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Finnish, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Svensk and Traditional Chinese.

You can install the Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.5.5 either by using Leopard's built-in software update mechanism (Apple Menu -> Software Update and select Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.5.5), or by downloading the standalone installer using the link provided just below.

A little bit about Apple's QuickTime...

QuickTime is a bundle of digital media software for creation, delivery and playback software that lets you play live or pre-recorded video and audio. The app seeks to provide the industry's first end-to-end, standards-based digital media delivery system, when combined with QuickTime Player and QuickTime Pro, according to Apple. Using the player, you can also export content to iPhone, iPod, and Apple TV, capture movies, and share them with your friends, or encode with the new H.264 video codec for better quality.

Along with the unveiling of Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), Apple also introduced QuickTime X. While not available for another year (or so), the streamlined, next-generation platform advances modern media and Internet standards, using media technology pioneered in OS X iPhone, Apple claims. QuickTime X features optimized support for modern codecs, but also more efficient media playback. QuickTime X is said to be ideal for any application that needs to play media content.
