A second U.S. source for chips used in iPhones and iPads

Apple has hired GlobalFoundries to make application processors for its hot-selling iDevices at its Fab 8 complex in Malta, Texas, according to sources close to the company.

More interesting, perhaps, is the fact that Samsung, which currently makes the bulk of Apple’s A-series chips, “will help with the start-up of the Apple program, ensuring that Apple will have a second U.S. source for chips for the popular smart phones and tablets,” according to the report.

Cited by timesunion.com, the source couldn’t say whether GlobalFoundries would be making the chips with Samsung, or if it would be shipping the end products directly to Apple’s iPhone and iPad assembly plants.

Reached out for comment, GlobalFoundries spokesman Jason Gorss said today, “We don’t comment on customer engagements or products unless they do so first. That is our standard policy.”
