Working at the computer all day, you need a good writing app to help you get in the zone

The story you are trying to tell may be different, but a great writing app for your Mac is always going to be your best friend. Apple has published a collection of some of the best Apps for Writers and the selection is just awesome.
There are four main categories – "Manuscript Makers," "Distraction-Free Writing," "Journaling & Blogging" and "Notes & Clippings," with a total of 34 apps. Some of them may seem more expensive, but the feature set is worth every cent.

If you are writing a Manuscript, Apple suggests you should first try Pages or iBooks Author. That's because most of the books you are going to write on a Mac will end up in the iBookstore. If you are putting together the script for the next blockbuster movie, than you may need to get Final Draft or Scrivener. They follow movie-industry standards that will be difficult to create with other apps.

Another great writing app is "Ulysses III," currently half price – $21.99 (€16.34). This is not just a writing app, it is a feature-rich folder for all your novels. You get in the writing mood by choosing your preferred theme and then you have a plethora of features ready to serve the most demanding writer's needs.

Next up, we have the "Distraction-Free Writing" apps. Nothing is Free in this category, but the best remains Byword.

It is hands down the best writing app for Mac. You can purchase it for $9.99 (€7.35) and get all the benefits of an elegant design, complete with Markdown capabilities, typewriter scrolling mode, and iCloud or Dropbox sync. Byword has an iPhone / iPad counterpart that helps you get the most of your writing. You can also subscribe for the premium package that will get you the option to publish straight to your blog.

Writer Pro, Write, OmmWriter Dana and WriteRoom are just as good so try them all or just glance over the screenshots and features to find the right one for you.

When it comes to Journaling, Day One is the premium app. You get a beautifully designed interface with lots of features that will help you remember your life day by day. MarsEdit is one of the best ways to post on WordPress or other major blogging platforms.

In the "Notes & Clippings" category, we have some of our favorite as well, starting with Simplenote. This free app is the best replacement for iOS's Notes App, and you can use it on your iPhone, Mac, iPad or online with a free account.

Evernote is the elephant (pun intended) in the China Shop here. This is the best "everything drawer" for Mac, but a little too big for just a Notes app. It can do so many things, and the premium-only OCR features are really helpful.

The Mac App Store has no internal links, so make sure to open the app and press on the "Apps for Writers."
