Apple announced yesterday that only two days after implementing podcasts into iTunes 4.9, it has recorded 1 million subscribers.
Let's suppose that once this commotion calms down, the rate of subscribers will drop with 75%, which means that in two days, 250,000 people will
subscribe to the service. Using simple computations we find out that at this rate, by the end of the month, 7.5 million iTunes users would have subscribed to podcasts.
Considering that one user can subscribe to several podcasts simultaneously, the actual figure of podcasts iTunes users is somewhere around 2-3 million.
And this means an important market for advertising. Jobs said that podcasts will still be free, but nothing stops the including of ads.
Considering that the online market is one of the most dynamic regarding promoting methods, the podcast is an excellent environment. Advertisers will be able to target their users precisely and only provide ads that are in accordance with their field of interest.
The above figures are speculative, but it's clear that we are witnessing the birth of an important online advertising channel.
