Two-factor authentication trickles in, asks users to enter four-digit verification code

Starting this week, Apple is gradually rolling out what is known in security circles as two-factor authentication (or two-step authentication) for people accessing the suite of iCloud services in a web browser.

iCloud is available pre-installed on iDevices and Macs, but Windows PC users can also install some of the services in what is known as an iCloud Control Panel (previously known as MobileMe Control Panel).

However, everyone can visit icloud.com on a browser and access some of the services, including iWork apps, regardless of their platform. Basically, all you need is a relatively new web browser (like Firefox, Chrome, or Safari) and Internet access.

Apple originally introduced two-factor authentication in March 2013. Until today, the company only required customers to authenticate using their Apple ID and password. However, now users are starting to receive notifications that they should turn on two-factor authentication to prevent having their account compromised.

Apparently the feature is rolling out slowly, as not everyone reports seeing the two-factor authentication prompt. Users who did receive it say they were asked for their phone number so that Apple could send a four-digit code to that other device. Other means of two-factor authentication are also available.
