Apple is adding a bunch of new features in the next major release of Final Cut Pro X later this year, according to producer, editor and director Larry Jordan, who had an on-the-record meeting with Apple this weekend in Las Vegas, the day before the start of the 2012 NAB Show.

Apple told Jordan (and other producers attending the meeting) that FCP X was a long-term project for the company, “and that they are fully committed to it.”

“In other words, because I asked, there is not a Final Cut Pro 8 waiting in the wings. Apple views Final Cut X as the future of video editing,” the producer writes on his blog.

Apple shared some of their plans for Final Cut Pro X with producers and confirmed to them that the updated video-editing software was coming later this year.

The Cupertino company “provided ‘advanced looks’ as part of the roll-out to the launch of FCP X and wanted to continue letting us know what’s coming,” an idea that Jordan personally regards as a good one, “because it helps [producers] plan.”

The highlights, none of which actually demoed, included: Multichannel Audio Editing Tools; Dual Viewers; MXF Plug-in Support; and RED camera support, according to Jordan.

The producer weighs in on each of these new additions and their supposed benefits in his lengthy blog post, which he concludes by saying “It was an interesting meeting. Apple clearly wants it known that FCP X should be considered a professional application, that development is on-going, and that they are listening to comments from users.”

Jordan said he tried to convince Apple to provide information on upcoming hardware, and that he hadn’t had any luck in this area.

He also speculated that there might be a new application in the works that would join FCP X, Motion, and Compressor, noting that “there are several that would be very useful.”
