Apple has released an important technical note for users of Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4 who have external drives connected to their Macs.

KB article HT5801 acknowledges that many external drives are sold pre-formatted as FAT32, or as other Windows file system architectures.

If you use a Windows-specific file system, your drive may act up when used with Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4.

Which is why, “Drives installed in your computer or connected externally via FireWire should be formatted using the ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled)’ disk format for the best performance with Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4,” Apple says.

The support article in question includes instructions on how to check the format of a hard disk, as well as how to format the disk using the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Go ahead and give it a glance, if you think this document targets you.
