“Mainly” due to competition from vendors of 7- to 8-inch tablets

Due to competition from other tablet computers, shipments of the iPad mini are expected to drop from 13-15 million units in the first quarter of 2013 to 10-12 million units in the second quarter, according to sources within the company’s supply chain.

By now you’ve probably guessed that the rumor comes from DigiTimes, which 99 percent of the time cites unnamed sources within Apple’s “supply chain.”

The latest report regarding iPad mini shipments says Apple is forced to trim down its orders as it is facing competition from “several 7- to 8-inch tablets.”

Apple is also widely expected to introduce a new version of the diminutive tablet PC this spring, so it’s not all bad. Plus, the reduction in shipments due to competition is said to be the “main” factor, but not the only one.
