The Smart Cover is great, so why not an iPad stand that has the same technology?

The iPad has parts that work great with magnets in cases to provide additional features. What if the same parts could be used to align cables, connectors or a stand? Apple has already thought of that, and they have patented an idea for some cool future accessories.

A new patent revealed by the US Patent and Trademark Office has been published this week, and it covers some of the ways Apple is thinking about using magnets to configure an iPad or have the iDevice stand up on a table.

According to patentlyapple, the new magnetic system for tablets is built into the housing of each device and it includes a magnetic element for interacting with the attachment system, hence the tablet is secured in place.

But Apple does not want to keep this idea only for an iPad stand or cover. They have taken it further. Other embodiments of the magnetic stand accessory items can be securely attached to a tablet device. For example, you could be attaching video game controllers, external keyboards or a stylus holder.

Apple is one step ahead in using magnets to interact with their devices. The iPad Smart Cover can turn the screen on and off, even if it is locked.

Having the last flap fold over the previous one allows the user to check its notifications or items that show up on the status bar, like the clock, connectivity or battery status at a glance.
