Apple’s iOS productivity applications - Pages, Keynote, and Numbers - have all received updates to support the 3.1 million pixels found on the new iPad’s Retina Display.

Pages 1.6 requires iOS 5.1 software update or later and it allows users to enter text using the landscape keyboard on iPhone and iPod touch, Apple said, as well as to create and view 3D bar, line, area, and pie charts.

The new Pages has been “enhanced to take advantage of the Retina display on the new iPad,” and includes performance improvements.

Pages is, by far, the most efficient word-processing app on any iOS device, despite the flurry of office apps currently available in the App Store.

Pages also works with iCloud, allowing you to keep your documents up to date on all your iOS devices.

“And the Retina display on the new iPad makes everything you do in Pages even more brilliant,” Apple says in the app’s description over at the App Store.

Keynote 1.6 requires the latest iOS software as well. With it, you can animate your 3D charts with Crane, Grow, Radial, Rotate, Rotate & Grow, and Z Axis builds, and use new builds and transitions including Iris, Shimmer, Wipe, Flame, Perspective, Swing, Object Push, Object Zoom, and Fade Through Color, according to the change log.

Keynote 1.6 is also Retina-enabled. Some performance improvements have been added here as well.

Finally, Numbers 1.6 includes the same enhancements as the two aforementioned iWork apps (including full support for the new iPad’s 2048x1536 resolution). It incorporates some performance tweaks of its own, and requires the latest version of iOS on the iPad 1, iPad 2 and third-generation iPad.

Apple specifically outlines that its iWork productivity apps are compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad (all versions). Starting with the 1.6 releases, no iOS version under 5.1 will be supported.
