Now that Disney is acquiring Pixar and Steve Jobs is on the Disney board of directors, things are looking quite ripe for a change.
How will this affect Apple, Jobs’s other company? Well, for one thing, Apple is now the prime candidate for Disney content. We’re not just talking the Disney animated feature films here, but the TV networks, programs and series. At this moment, the race is on for the living room and the unified multimedia
experience. Whoever breaks the wall and creates the digital hub that connects your computer and TV to your music and video is going to be the big winner, and the race has been on for some time.
Microsoft has been at it for quite some time now with its Media Center PC but rumors are that Apple is working on its own media center hub, a revamped Mac Mini that will prove the missing link in connecting all your information and devices together. The Mini never surfaced at the MacWorld Expo, but many think the unveiling was rescheduled at the very last moment because of several factors such as the lawsuit with Burst.com.
But even without the hub, Apple has gone a long way to creating a unifying experience with the iTunes + Music Store + iPod combo, and has broken new ground in terms of content delivery such as TV shows. And Disney was the icebreaker with Apple on this one, being the first to take the risk and actually ofer the new video content. This was a risk, because there was no way to be sure that the Download would not cannibalize the ratings for the TV shows, but the people at Disney took that risk and took the next step forward, and it has paid well.
With Apple and Disney now being so close, you can be sure that this was only the beginning, and that much, much more is on the way.
