High-end notebook discontinued amid lack of demand, or production costs

Drowned in a sea of upgrades for the 13-inch and 15-inch configurations, the 17-inch MacBook Pro has been axed from the Apple Store, leaving only two display options for new buyers. Three, if you count the extra pixels on the Retina-enabled MacBook Pro.

As Steve Jobs once said, “Death is life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make room for the new.” And, really, it doesn’t get much simpler than that. Apple is looking after its priorities, not the cries of some fanboy whose sole usage of the increased screen real estate was to watch bigger YouTube videos.

At best, you can say they had high production costs, but I wouldn’t bet on this being the main reason.

And rest assured that if the Pro industry does cry its loss, you’ll see a Retina upgrade next year that’ll blow the head off your shoulders. So far, the only portable powerhouse people seem to want is the 15-inch form factor.
